چکیده

AA Tau, a classical T Tauri star in the Taurus cloud, has been the subject of intensive photometric monitoring for more than two decades due to its quasi-cyclic variation in optical brightness. Beginning in 2011, AA Tau showed another peculiar variation—its median optical though near-IR flux dimmed significantly, a drop consistent with a 4-mag increase in visual extinction. It has stayed in the faint state since. Here we present 4.7 μm CO rovibrational spectra of AA Tau over eight epochs, covering an 11 yr time span, that reveal enhanced CO and CO absorption features in the Jlow ⩽ 13 transitions after the dimming. These newly appeared absorptions require molecular gas along the line of sight with T∼ 500 K and a column density of log (N CO 12 ) ∼18.5 cm, with line centers that show a constant 6 km s redshift. The properties of the molecular gas confirm an origin in the circumstellar material. We suggest that the dimming and absorption are caused by gas and dust lifted to large heights by a magnetic buoyancy instability. This material is now propagating inward, and on reaching the star within a few years will be observed as an accretion outburst.

Resolving Molecular Line Emission from Protoplanetary Disks: Observational Prospects for Disks Irradiated by Infalling Envelopes

Molecular line observations that could resolve protoplanetary disks of ∼ 100 AU both spatially and kinematically would be a useful tool to unambiguously identify these disks and to determine their kinematical and physical characteristics. In this work we model the expected line emission from a protoplanetary disk irradiated by an infalling envelope, addressing the question of its detectability ...

High-resolution 4.7 Micron Keck/nirspec Spectra of Protostars. I. Ices and Infalling Gas in the Disk of L1489 Irs

We explore the infrared M-band (4.7 lm) spectrum of the Class I protostar L1489 IRS in the Taurus molecular cloud. This is the highest-resolution wide-coverage spectrum at this wavelength of a low-mass protostar observed to date (R = 25,000; Dv = 12 km s 1). A large number of narrow absorption lines of gasphase 12CO, 13CO, and C18O are detected, as well as a prominent band of solid 12CO. The ga...

Warm Hcn, C2h2, and Co in the Disk of Gv Tau

We present the first high-resolution, ground-based observations of HCN and C2H2 toward the T Tauri binary star system GV Tau. We detected strong absorption due to HCN 3 and weak C2H2 [ 3 and 2 þ ( 4 þ 5)0þ] absorption toward the primary (GV Tau S) but not the infrared companion. We also report CO column densities and rotational temperatures, and present abundances relative to CO of HCN/CO 0:6% ...

Bondi-hoyle-lyttleton Accretion onto a Protoplanetary Disk

Young stellar systems orbiting in the potential of their birth cluster can accrete from the dense molecular interstellar medium during the period between the star’s birth and the dispersal of the cluster’s gas. Over this time, which may span several Myr, the amount of material accreted can rival the amount in the initial protoplanetary disk; the potential importance of this ‘tail-end’ accretion...

CO Fundamental Emission from V836 Tau

We present high resolution 4.7μm CO fundamental spectroscopy of V836 Tau, a young star with properties that are between those of classical and weak T Tauri stars and which may be dissipating its circumstellar disk. We find that the CO line profiles of V836 Tau are unusual in that they are markedly doublepeaked, even after correcting for stellar photospheric absorption in the spectrum. This sugg...
